Hap Ki Do Training at Osan Air Base

Hap Ki Do Training at Osan Air Base

When my husband and I knew we were coming to South Korea, we immediately started talking about the martial arts available here.  Since then, we have realized that the same challenges arise here as in the United States. There are a lot of mediocre instructors, a lot of low quality instructors and very few excellent instructors. Finding the excellent ones while combating the language barrier can be challenging!
We have been blessed to find Master Chang (full name Chang Yong Sil).
He has been teaching at Osan Air Base for at least 40 years.
We still have not pinpointed how long EXACTLY he has been training. He does not view it as important and in the past many people have twisted the information he has given them for their own purposes.
He only wants "The True Way" taught.
We found a flyer at Osan, watched one of his classes, met with him to discuss what Hap Ki Do is all about, and signed up to begin training with him in the evenings at his off-base school about 10 minutes away from Osan Air Base.

At Osan, he teaches 8-9:30 am Monday through Saturday and 6-7:15 pm Monday through Friday.

Master Chang (pronounced more like "Jung") does not advertise on the internet. He only gains students through word of mouth and flyers at Osan.
Here are two of his earlier flyers:

Now, it costs $100 a month per person to train with Master Chang.
When we started and over the next three months, there were only 5 students total involved in training.
There have been many classes that we benefited from being the only 2 people in class!

You can see the Federation uses Chinese characters, because originally China occupied the Korean peninsula. Later the Japanese occupied the peninsula.  The Korean War resulted in a split between North and South Korea. The United States was integral part of South Koreans gaining their independence.
Master Chang lived in the northern part of the peninsula with his family before the war resulted in North and South Korea. He moved south during the conflict.

Master Chang refers to himself as our Sa-bam-nim, or our teacher/instructor.
(I will update this later to include the Hangul characters!)
Here he is showing us a Hap Ki Do magazine distributed in the 1970s. He has kept so much history!
We only wish we could read the Hangul characters!
The publications often included pictures of chiropractic techniques and descriptions for further study!

Here we are in our white belts!! I have studies Tang Soo Do, also a Korean martial art, for about 15 years. I haven't been a white belt since I was 10!
I have since determined that it is even greater for your mind and spirit to become a white belt again!
I never would have called myself a prideful person until placed in the situation of being positioned below my husband in class (since that's the way we originally lined up) when he has never had any martial arts training.
I can honestly say it has been wonderful for growing Christian humility in myself. It also puts me in the proper frame of mind as the submissive wife God has called me to be by teaching me to let my husband lead our family...and lead us in the martial arts.

After about a month and a half of training, we tested for yellow belt.
Testing costs $40.
Tests are held during a normal class time and other students are encouraged to participate.
You turn in your old belt and receive your new belt at the next class you attend after testing.

Master Chang looks so solemn in these pictures, but he has a great sense of humor too!
That never gets in the way of really hard training though!
We always leave class completely exhausted and dripping in sweat :)

Below, you see Master Chang on the left, a Hap Ki Do "older brother" named Kenny in the middle and my husband on the right.
Master Chang believes that seeing "older brother" participating in the test with us helps us to learn more by seeing what he does and knows.

We were proud to test for yellow belt!

About 2.5-3 months after beginning our Hap Ki Do training, we tested for blue belt.
The belts for our school are: white belt, yellow belt, 1st blue belt, 2nd blue belt, 1st brown belt, 2nd brown belt, and black belt.
Master Chang says that color belts, black belt and master are the levels that matter.
He does not refer to himself or post anyway what level of master he is.
We have our suspicions, but we do not want to add to the "lie way" that many have chosen to share.

Below, I am throwing William, another "older brother" who is no longer training with us.
His mind was not focused on Hap Ki Do.
Master Chang has taught us that: Hap means "harmony," Ki means "energy," and Do means "way."
So Hap Ki Do means the way of harmony of all your energy.
Master Chang always says, "Mind and body together, always."

Master Chang wanted to get some pictures of me throwing William.

It really amuses him for me to throw William.

I think I threw him about 40 times that day.

Poor William!

In class, Master Chang calls me "minnie mouse," because it's so cute when I throw these big guys!
Haha

Now that neither Kenny or William are training anymore, my husband is the victim of Master Chang's amusement. He regularly has me throw him a LOT!

Master Chang has been teaching the same way, the same techniques, the same level of intensity for over 40 years. He is such a wonderful person to know and we are already "Hap Ki Do family," as he says!

We'll keep you posted!

Dream Depot in Cheonan

Dream Depot in Cheonan

3 Floors of Awesomeness!!

Earlier this week, I went with a couple friends from Protestant Women of the Chapel (PWOC) to Dream Depot in Cheonan. Dream Depot is a craft store, art store, and party supply store.
It is awesome!!

From Camp Humphreys:
(It took us about 45 minutes from New Housing where I live.)
Exit out the CPX gate (or the main gate really) and turn right on 45 towards Asan
45 will combine with 32 towards Dunpo
Keep following 45 towards Asan (will fork to the left at one point)
Take 628 towards Cheonan
628 will fork several times, but keep following the signs for 628 towards Cheonan (often coincides with highway 1)

When you see this building, you need to do a U-turn at the light.
If you get to the Lotte World, you've gone too far.

You will have passed "Dream depot" on the left.

Once you have done a U-turn and Dream depot is on your right, go just past it and turn right.
You should see signs with a P for parking.
If there is no parking right behind the building, you will have to go down this ramp pictured below for the parking inside the parking structure.

Inside the parking structure, you will take these stairs up to the main level.
Keep following the arrows!!

There's the door to Dream depot!
Be careful on the stairs ;)

Dream depot has 3 levels.
The first level has lots of pens, organizational bins, and many other things!

Minion keychains! This is a great place to find wonderful little gifts for family and friends back in the States!

Great organizational stuff!!

Super cute plastic drawers!
Koreans love everything to be "cute" :)

Floor mats, including the wood-looking raised flooring popular in many Korean-style homes.

Plastic pots!

Batteries galore!

Printer cartridges...

Pens! The changing color kind! You can even choose the pen you want along with the colors you want!
I remember having one of these in school :)

They have great little notebooks for prayer and Bible study!

Handmade cards

Jewelry making materials...

Sewing accessories, patches...

My friends were so fun to be with! But her little girl definitely got the most attention! Koreans love babies even more than Americans!

Bows and headbands...

Things to make your own bows...

The 2nd Floor had lots of office supplies!

Also toys! Lots of toys!

Twist-up crayons! I love these!

Electronics! Koreans love technology. I'm not sure I've been in a store without some form of technology being sold.

Label and picture paper!

Giant and tiny office supplies!

Loved all the office accessories...

So many types of glue!
(Sorry, not gonna take the time to go back and rotate this picture ;)

Magnets!

Stamps and ink!

I was seriously debating these alphabet stamps!

So many colors to choose from!

Little ID holders/bags...
My mom would love these!

Clipboards of every kind...

So many toys!

Sports equipment! I want a volleyball!!
(Side note: I played volleyball in 8th and 9th grade and loved it!)

Plastic shoes ;)

Label holders...

Plastic stands and storage...

Traditional Korean games!! I am definitely gonna have to check some of these out!

Cutting mats...

The 3rd Floor has lots of art and party supplies!

Colored rocks, shells, and sands...

Easels and frames...

I love my friends! So silly ;)

Every color of spray paint!! They are kinda pricey though at 12,500 won apiece (and that's on sale)!

So many types...wish I knew what they said ;)

Might end up buying this to use on our dining table we built!

Now these were the cheap spray paints, but there were limited color choices.
Also, I'm really not sure what "lacquer paint" should/should not be used for...

Lacquer paint color choices...

Awesome canvases!! So many shapes! Not just boring rectangles :)

Ribbon!

A painter's dream store...

Small pieces of wood like dowels...

Some mirrors...

Masking tape in a ton of colors and patterns!

Buttons :)

Wood accessories...I bought that tree one at the bottom...

Plenty of decor for classrooms or for parties...

I really like these tin boxes and the wire baskets at the bottom, but they were a bit pricey. That white basket on the bottom, left was about 20,000 won (or about $20). I'm kinda cheap though ;)

These are pretty cool...traditional paper folding projects.

Little model kits...

Paper pom poms in all different colors and shapes...

Tiny clothes pins and paper clips...
So many tiny things!

Metal sheeting...might be great to use in a frame for a jewelry board?

Fabric and paper flowers...

Party supplies!

Such a cutie! She has no idea why we are so enthralled... ;)

Halloween costumes! If you need one before Halloween...

Balloons in all different colors!
My friends bought tons of supplies for a baby shower here!

I love masks ;)

Wigs...

Even noodles! These would be great to make wreaths out of too!

Foam balls for decor!

Even fireworks!!

All ready for her 1st birthday party...way in the future ;)

All you could need for a magic show...

Birthday candles!

Tons of plastic-type fabric or sticky-backed fabric...

Foam board in lots of colors...

Really cool sticky-backed paper! I love glitter!

Plastic bowls...not sure what to use these for, but at least they have them right!

Close-up on the metal sheeting from earlier...I keep coming back to these...maybe a DIY project in my future?! Oh and they had semi-transparent, square, colored plastic that would be great for a dry erase board if you didn't want a boring white one!

They even have sand paper!

Love me some wooden toys, but man are they expensive! Almost $50 for this small plastic container...

Fabric markers...

Fabric dyes...

Cheaper paints...

RIT dyes for those pinterest projects I've pinned!

They had coordinating fabric tape!! I wanted some so bad, but I was determined not to come home with anything that I didn't already have a project planned for!

Yeah, we had quite a haul when we got done! But we did all three use one cart ;) so it's really not that bad! We did spend several hours here! Heehee :)
And of course, days later I realized that I got NO pictures of myself... Typical.

We had so much fun and ate McDonald's on the way home!
I will definitely be going back there in the near future!!
