Building a Table in Korea

Building a Table in Korea

So, we have been burned in the past spending entirely too much for a table that was particle board and veneer. One scratch and it was done for. Hubby and I decided then and there that we would try to build our next table. We have built a few smaller projects and are feeling pretty confident, but now we add the language barrier. How do we explain what we want to Korean nationals, without knowing much of the language...

Well, we started by finding a place with wood...literally we drove around until we saw some wood and went and pantomimed what we needed.

Thankfully, they spoke a little English and we had pictures from our Ana White rustic table plans, which we modified. We decided to build a 6 foot long table that is 36 inches wide with tapered legs. We also decided to use 2x boards, which are thicker than the plans and 2x4s for all the supports with 4x4s (which are actually 3 inches square) for the legs.

I swear I was actually involved in this process...in addition to taking the pictures!

But hubby was definitely the one responsible for the table legs! They are awesome! I didn't want square, bulky legs, so he came up with these beauties!

And our dog Ellie enjoyed the sun and supervised ;)

We used a kreg jig to hide all the screws and got fussed at by an older Korean lady (our neighbor across the balconies) in her dressing gown for all the noise we were making. We only worked on it during the day and mainly on the weekend, so we didn't feel too bad.
The owner of our building stopped by and heard the lady's complaints, but only laughed about it with us (as he acted out a growling bear)!

And here it is in our kitchen!! It's a little tall right now...about 32 inches tall. We will probably shorten it a couple inches so normal chairs will work with it.

It is a great size for any place. We are going to build two benches that will seat 3 people each, so we don't need chairs on the ends (and need less space for the table)!

Now we live on post...building is going to get even more interesting in the future, but at least little Korean ladies won't be fussing at us anymore ;)
Last note, we decided to build this table the weekend before we moved on post. Then, we left the country within the week after that. We have had a super busy month! Now we just have to find stain...
I am REALLY missing Lowe's and Home Depot!!
